Current problems at inspection points: substantiation of the need for an automated solution to maintain the attention of the X-ray system operator
In the course of the assessment of aviation safety legislation requirements implementation, a number of problems were identified that negatively affect the efficiency of operational processes and the facility safety level. For example, reduced concentration of inspection operators’ attention, deviations from work regulations are common phenomena at inspection points.
According to the ICAO Aviation Safety Manual 8973/9, Chapter 8, Part 8.2.8, the reduction of the concentration level of the X-ray operator’s attention comes after 15-20 minutes of monotonous work, therefore, a shift schedule is highly recommended for specialists.
Mistakes connected with the human factor (phone distraction, sleep, operator absence, defocused attention) affect the quality and efficiency of the inspection. The introduction of new, increasingly sophisticated screening technologies in response to changing threat factors also requires the most complete assessment of the human factor.

The reason for inspection operators’ mistakes may also be the lack of motivation to perform their duties effectively.
An innovative threat penetration prevention system FOCUS was developed based on the current issues.
Threat penetration prevention system FOCUS is a hardware and software system based on the analysis of video stream and neural network. The system analyzes the video stream from the camera installed on the X-ray system operator’s monitor screen. In case of deviation from the operator’s work regulations (sleep, distraction, absence, lost gaze), the system generates the corresponding reaction to the event:
– alarm signal
– X-ray system conveyor lock
Detailed information about the functionality and benefits of threat penetration prevention system FOCUS can be found in the brochure.
